Labourers who turned up for work at the Paul Devertuil cocoa estate early yesterday morning were thrown into shock when they discovered the body of a man with multiple stab wounds and burn marks on his body lying in the bushes.

Police are working on the theory the man, of East Indian descent and in his early forties, was the victim of a robbery.

Chaguanas homicide officers said yesterday while the body is yet to be positively identified, a missing person report had been made earlier of a PH taxi driver from the Couva area.

They believe the body is that of the PH driver.

The police suspect he was taken alive to the estate, tucked away in a remote area in Gran Couva, where he was stabbed several times and then set afire.

“It seems his pants started to burn and he took it off. There were burns on his legs and buttocks.”

His vehicle was nowhere to be found. Estate workers called the Gran Couva police around 6.55 and officers visited the scene shortly after.

“He is brown skinned with short black wavy hair and of medium height.

The police said a man believed to be the father of the murdered man visited the station to identify him.

“He was shown a picture but was not sure it was his son.”

The incident had workers on the estates and residents traumatised.

Crime in Gran Couva, once deemed the third safest place in T&T, is very low.
